    PP that smells terrible

    Hi all,

We recently received a large quantity of PP resin in. As soon as we received the resin in there was a terrible smell to it and it was making some of our material handlers woozy even being around it. This grade of PP has never been like this for us before.

Does anyone know what Is wrong with this PP? is this PP safe to use?

Analyze it, this shouldn't happen with PP

Please describe "terrible"! Like sewage? Sweet? Acrid? Burnt?

Yes, that should be no good.
May be it is from recycled milk bottles. Sometimes they are not cleaned right.

I would say almost like a combination of burnt and acidic.

If it does contain reprocessed resin there is likely contamination with another polymer. I worked for a short time at a bag maker in the repro department reclaiming scrap plastic and film scrap into pellets. The smell you are describing occurred when some types of stretch wrap were ground up and used in the process - I believe it was Saran plastic that caused the problem. It would usually add a slight grayish/brown color to the pellets along with the overpoweringly nasty burnt smell.
