    Re: Liquid color issue

We got a PPE mixing nozzle with four elements and that helped substantially. The parts are small with constant wall thickness, hollow cylinders about 1.5" long.

    Re: Cosmetic Process Window

The images you posted are fairly small and make it difficult to read the graphs, you may want to reupload them to somewhere like Imgur and link them here.

Is there any sort of velocity limit on...

    Re: Liquid color issue

A small update, we ran another tool that is a cold runner with the same shot size but different parts. No color issues were observed with this mold, but some processing changes were made that will...

    Re: Cosmetic Process Window

I'm not sure how to solve it, but it looks like a delay in the response of the machine. Is this an electric or hydraulic machine?

    Re: Liquid color issue

Another update, smaller barrier screw is installed. Mixing in the liquid color is very homogeneous but the knit line issue remains. Waiting to hear back from Mold Masters and hopefully get a...

    Re: Liquid color issue

Thanks for the input, I'll be doing a DoE soon. We have a smaller screw for the machine that is a barrier screw designed for acetal, but the supplier was not able to install it while they were here...

    Liquid color issue

We have a new tool that was transfered into us. It's 48 cavity hot runner in acetal (Celcon M90) using a liquid color. We have the process dialed in to make parts at the center of the tolerance range...

    Re: Velocity Study

I'd agree with your statement. For parts with tight tolerances I will get my fill only shot back to the same weight as the qualified process if I make a change to injection speed.

    Re: Velocity Study

If you want to make full and packed parts to determine the effect of injection speed on part dimensions I would adjust the transfer to 95-98% filled parts for each injection speed tested.
    For the...
  10. Re: Protecting the cavity edges before glass blasting?

We had a simple MUD that we needed to blast every 3,000 cycles. We had a mask machined from aluminum to protect the edges during blasting.

    Re: Toshiba! Your favorite machine?

Sumitomos are kind of quirky, ours have been reliable and accurate. I haven't had to deal with the service or parts.
Toshiba has my favorite controller (The V50) but I think we've had similar...

Re: Ultem and CF Peek in an aluminum mold

What is the thickness of the part? What size and shape are the gates and runners/sprue?

I'm hoping that only one of the 0.625 dimensions in this sketch is correct and your part has a much...

Have you been happy with the DLC you've used? Also which plater(s) have you used for this?

That looks like silicone to me, can you try to melt it with a soldering iron to confirm?
  15. Re: Documentation Process for trials/validation of a new mold

Thanks for your response. I've read a number of books including Suha's. Mostly I was curious what quantity is really being done after joining a company that doesn't record any of it.

    I'm the only...
  16. Documentation Process for trials/validation of a new mold

When you bring a new mold in and run trials/validation, what information do you record?

We are a small custom molding shop and typically run orders of 1,000-50,000 per year. Currently the only...

    Re: Shot Size Procedure

That sounds a little weird to me compared to what I did in school. The one time I did this in school they had us set a large injection stroke and large cushion, then decrease the transfer position...

Re: Silver Fibers show Up when Parts are Rubbed!

Chris, thanks for the insight. I'm new to this and we have a lot of molds with an EDM finish. I'll have to keep an eye out for these defects.

Chris, why would you want to avoid an EDM finish here?

Re: Toshiba Electric Injection Molding Machines

I've mostly used Toshiba and Sumitomo. Our electric machines are smaller, 60 to 250 ton. I prefer the controllers on the Toshiba (V50), they're much more intuitive. We had one machine with some sort...

Re: Rapid Prototyping and 3D Printing

Is the magnetic ABS commercially available? I've done prints with internal voids for permanent magnets but haven't considered using a material that is inherently magnetic.

Re: Rapid Prototyping and 3D Printing

We got around 1000 parts in ABS out of an SLS aluminum filled nylon insert. Cooling was an issue, the insert was about 1" thick and would retain heat pretty well. Had the mold base it was in set to...
